Northwest Indiana Mesh Net
Off-grid, long-range encrypted messaging across Northwest Indiana. No cell towers. No subscriptions. Community built.
We’re a growing community deploying Meshtastic infrastructure—home nodes, rooftop relays, solar stations, and mobile units—to create a resilient regional communications mesh that keeps working when the internet is down, congested, or unavailable.
Purpose: Expand coverage across NWI (from the Lakefront to the rural South) for decentralized, encrypted messaging and low-power telemetry.
What is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic is an open-source messaging system that runs on affordable, low-power LoRa radios. Unlike a phone, it doesn’t require a carrier or internet connection—devices communicate directly and can relay messages through nearby nodes.
Think of it as off-grid texting for the community. It enables:
Long range (including record-setting line-of-sight tests: 205 mi by MartinR7 & alleg)
Mesh routing — messages can hop node-to-node without a central router
Encrypted channels for private groups and trusted coordination
Excellent battery life — ideal for battery and solar-powered deployments
Text messaging between members of the mesh (phone app ↔ radio)
Optional GPS location sharing and telemetry (configurable and responsible)
